Overview
HCG CCK Cancer Centre, Nairobi, Kenya is East Africa’s first private comprehensive cancer centre
This centre is well-equipped with advanced technology and delivers the highest quality cancer care to cancer patients in the East African region. Through this collaboration, HCG became the first Indian cancer hospital chain to invest in the African continent.
Statistics show us that around 25% of Africans believe that cancer is a disease that has no cure, while 36% of them believe that cancer is a major health issue. Right awareness is the key to prevent these assumptions from overpowering the patients’ will to look for quality cancer care. HCG CCK is also actively involved in creating cancer awareness amongst the masses that will not only help them reach out for the right treatment the first time but also give them a better understanding of cancer as a disease.
HCG CCK aims to deliver unmatched cancer care by providing patients with access to a wide range of services like prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care. The centre houses the best cancer specialists in Kenya, who are highly qualified and experienced in administering high-end treatment protocols for almost every cancer type irrespective of its location and stage.
Treatment Approach
At HCG CCK Cancer Centre, we aim to deliver cancer care that is not only value-based but also patient-centric.
Our specialists use the very unique multidisciplinary approach to plan treatments for cancers based on the type, stage and the patient’s overall condition. Simply put, with this approach, the treatment given will be specific to that patient rather than to that specific cancer type.
The multidisciplinary team is made up of surgical, radiation and medical oncologists with support from anaesthetists, pain management specialists and general physicians.
Diagnostic Services at HCG CCK Cancer Centre
HCG CCK is equipped with advanced technology to provide optimum diagnostic support to patients in and around Kenya.
CT Scan: A computerised tomography scan or CT scan is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic procedure that provides comprehensive information on the exact location and size of abnormal masses, which could be benign or malignant.
Mammography: Mammography is a non-invasive imaging procedure that helps in breast cancer detection. It is used as a screening tool for breast cancer. Mammography is also used for breast cancer detection and diagnosis among women with breast cancer signs such as a lump in the breast, pain, nipple discharge and changes in the skin texture.
X-Ray: X-ray scans help in detecting structural abnormalities and they also play an important role in the detection of lung, stomach and kidney cancers.
We also have an in-house laboratory that offers diagnostic services like biochemistry, haematology, clinical pathology and cytology and helps our patients receive on-time diagnostic support.
Treatment at HCG CCK Cancer Centre
HCG CCK Cancer Centre is the first comprehensive cancer centre in the East African region that houses all three major cancer treatment modalities under a single roof.
Radiation Oncology
The radiation oncology department at HCG CCK Cancer Centre is well-equipped with advanced technology to facilitate various forms of radiotherapy such as Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), 3D-CRT and Brachytherapy.
Radiation therapy uses high-energy radiation beams to precisely target the tumour and destroy the tumour cells by damaging their DNA structure. It is a non-invasive procedure, which can be received as an outpatient, too.
As a treatment method, this comes with numerous advantages such as:
- Reduced damage to the surrounding tissues
- Shorter treatment regimens
- Faster recovery as it is a non-invasive approach
- Less pain and no blood loss
Radiotherapy can be used to treat a wide range of cancers, namely head and neck cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervix cancer, eye cancer, etc. In many cases, radiotherapy is combined with other treatment methods like chemotherapy and surgery to enhance the effectiveness of the overall treatment given.
Medical Oncology
The medical oncology department at HCG CCK Cancer Centre is made capable of delivering both inpatient and outpatient care. HCG CCK has the best medical oncologists in Kenya who are skilled in the efficient management of solid tumours and neoplasms in adults and children, outpatient chemotherapy with chemo ports, etc.
Chemotherapy is a systemic cancer treatment method that uses specialised drugs to stop and slow down the growth of cancer cells. In many cases, chemotherapy is used along with radiation therapy and surgery to destroy the cancer cells that could not be killed with radiation or surgery alone. During surgeries, chemotherapy could be administered before the surgery (neoadjuvant) or after (adjuvant).
Surgical Oncology
Surgical management of cancer involves the removal of the tumour and a small portion of the healthy tissue surrounding it. Multiple factors such as the type of cancer, the stage, location, grade, overall condition of the patient, etc., are considered before surgery is recommended as the suitable treatment plan.
At HCG CCK Cancer Centre, our surgical oncologists are trained and experienced in multiple oncology subspecialties, such as gynae oncology, uro oncology, ortho oncology, breast cancers, and head and neck cancers, etc.
In recent years, innovative surgical techniques have helped oncologists focus on improving not just the survival rates but the quality of life too. Today, we have new age surgical approaches such as organ preservation, organ reconstruction, etc., that come with a myriad of advantages like fewer side effects, shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and enhanced quality of life post-treatment.
Palliative and Supportive Care
Our palliative and supportive care unit helps terminally ill patients manage their symptoms and have a better quality of life. Our palliative care team is also experienced in managing physical and psychological issues faced by these patients.
These patients are given round-the-clock care and support, which helps them have a peaceful end of life experience.
